...From the time that Linda began with Sentrx, she was very motivated to build a successful region in the West, an area that in my opinion presented great opportunity for Sentrx. I was impressed by Linda’s relentless efforts to contact potential new clients, establish meetings and compete to win new business. During regular trips to the western region of the U.S., Linda always prepared me with detailed information about who we were meeting with, the therapeutic area of the company and key information about how we could be successful in our presentation. Her post- meeting follow-up was also excellent.

Linda had increasing levels of success, for example her work resulted in the culmination of a $3 million sale to a Bay Area biotechnology company, which was a very large pharmacovigilance services deal for Sentrx. MAKING HISTORY: UCSF SCHOOL OF PHARMACY, IMPACT of clinical pharmacy

Since the beginning of the Ninth-floor Project, there had been a great deal of pressure to prove the clinical and economic benefit of clinical pharmacy services. In 1982, the team of Eric T. (Toby) Herfindal, Linda Bernstein, and Donald Kishi undertook studies to quantify and evaluate some of the roles that had emerged at UCSF, specifically in the orthopedic, vascular, and cardiothoracic services. Prescribing patterns of physicians on services with clinical pharmacists were monitored and compared with patterns on similar units without clinical pharmacy services. The results demonstrated significant reduction in orthopedic post-operative antibiotic prophylaxis when the clinical pharmacist was present. There was also an overall reduction in drug cost and a reduction (although statistically non-significant) in length of stay.

In 1984, the American Society of Hospital Pharmacy Research and Education Foundation bestowed the Research Award for Outstanding Contribution to the Literature of Research in Hospital Pharmacy to the team for the orthopedic study published in the American Journal of Hospital Pharmacy (40:1945–1951, 1983). In 1985, the Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery studies were published in Drug Intelligence and Clinical Pharmacy (19, 440–444, 1985). In 1986, Michael Winter, Herfindal, and Bernstein published a paper in the American Journal of Hospital Pharmacy (43, 2178–2184, 1986) on the impact of the UCSF Pharmacokinetic Consult Service.

July of 1990 marked the premiere of Pharmacy Rounds, a primetime weekly educational television series presented by the UCSF School of Pharmacy and produced by American Medical Video of Houston. The series was the only one of its kind on national television and aired weekly on Lifetime Medical Television. Toby Herfindal, Pharm.D., M.P.H., Chairman of the Division of Clinical Pharmacy was Executive Producer and Linda Bernstein, Pharm.D., then Associate Clinical Professor was Producer, Writer and Host. Pharmacy Rounds offered ACPE credits and had an estimated viewership of 60,000 pharmacists, 20,000 physicians, 200,000 nurses and 3.2 million health conscious consumers. It received top awards from the International Health and Medical Film Festival.
